New Canadian Research Body Sets Out Stall

Canada’s new research industry body CRIC is taking shape, having agreed a statement of purpose and a range of policies. These cover standards and advocacy, membership categories and the development of the CMRP designation for individuals working in the industry.

New Canadian Research Body Sets Out StallAt a 13th November Board Meeting at the Toronto offices of Ipsos Canada, the nine founding members of CRIC (the Canadian Research Insights Council or Le Conseil de recherche et d’intelligence marketing canadien) voted to approve its immediate incorporation as a non-profit organization. The Statement of purpose reads as follows: ‘CRIC’s mandate is to develop and approve market and research standards and supportive programs; provide effective promotion and advocacy for the market and insights research industry; serve as a source of information for the industry; and be a forum for collective industry action. CRIC will provide membership to research organizations and industry partners who share the purpose of the Corporation and meet criteria established by the Board of the Corporation’.

CRIC will soon open up its membership to other categories of organization: former MRIA Gold Seal members will be able to apply to become a CRIC member, and will be given a one-year grace period to complete its certification process. All other organizations must go through the process before being considered for membership. Members will fall into two categories: Class A for ‘Accredited Members’, and Class B for non-voting Associate Members – the latter open to buyers of research, media, government and academia. Information on a membership Class for suppliers to research companies will be issued shortly.

Board Members voted to endorse ‘a credible Canadian solution to the CMRP designation’ (Canadian Market Research Professional), homeless since the demise of MRIA. The Council will work with MRIA Fellow Robert Wong to develop this, as previously announced.

On standards, CRIC had already agreed to adopt a ‘Canadianized’ version of the most recent ESOMAR global code, and now says it will incorporate AAPOR and WAPOR polling standards, ‘in order to promote the highest ethics and transparency in policy-related and public opinion polling’.

The Board intends CRIC to be a strong advocate for the market and survey research industry, and has already intervened on the matter of Statistics Canada’s initiative to harvest the financial data of Canadians, writing both to the federal Privacy Commissioner and the Senate of Canada’s Banking Committee. The Chief Statistician of Canada has invited CRIC to a meeting to discuss the matter.

CRIC Board members also re-appointed Barry Watson (Environics) as Chair and Don Mills (CRA) as Co-Chair. Gary Bennewies (Ipsos) was appointed Secretary Treasurer.

The Board is aiming to hold its first open board meeting in Q1 of 2019.
