Fair Data is the trust mark that reassures people that businesses and organisations that they share information with will protect their information and ensure it is held securely.
The Fair Data mark means that the business or organisation is only keeping information about someone that is a customer or who participated in research with the agreed permission of that person. Fair Data ensures that people can always inquire and amend information that is kept about them, and that the information is only used for the purposes that the person has agreed to. Fair Data means that people will also know who that information is shared with, and request for their records to be deleted whenever they want.
But how do we know that the Fair Data logo means that the business or organisation is really following the Fair Data rules? The answer is that the entity is audited – by independent auditors – every year.
Now AMSRS is about to launch an online portal to make the audits even more thorough, while streamlining the process. Fair Data applicants and businesses renewing their Fair Data credentials will have access to the latest regulations through the Fair Data portal, as well as cross-references to a range of standards, including the Australian Privacy Act, the Australian Privacy Principles, The AMSRS Code of Professional Behaviour, the International standard for market and social research, ISO 20252 and now the European General Data Protection Regulations.
The Fair Data portal will be used by applicants for Fair Data, or businesses renewing Fair Data, to provide the documentary evidence of their processes and compliance with the twelve Fair Data Principles. Each year, the documents and processes are reviewed and checked by professional auditors, who will feedback to the business or company any required improvements and check that these have been implemented before the Fair Data mark can be used.
The Fair Data portal will not provide access to any personal information, so it does not create any risk of data breaches – in fact the Fair Data portal is also checked to ensure that not personal information is provided or linked to it in any way – the strictest standards of privacy and security have been applied.
Fair Data accreditation is available to all businesses and organisations – including market and social research organisations and businesses that maintain customer databases.
AMSRS are currently trialing the portal. If you are interested in signing up for the Fair Data mark please contact AMSRS CEO, Elissa Molloy at email@example.com or call her on 02 9566 3100 to discuss your options.
